INTRODUCTION
The Yapei Area Council as part of efforts to help promote safe hygiene and sanitation practices in the Area Council, organized a cleanup exercise at the Yapei Market on Friday, 19th November, 2021.
The purpose of this exercise was to bring forth the patronage of self-initiated activities, such as the promotion of a clean markets, and proper environmental health.
The Area Council had always received numerous complaints from concerned citizens as to the state of the market, and as means of tackling the issue, organized a cleanup exercise. Support was received from NADMO and Zoomlion Ghana Ltd.
CLEANUP EXERCISE
The exercise took place at the Yapei township, with cleaning also taking place at Ntereso/Yapei-Yipala, particularly along the main road and parts of the inner township that needed cleaning.
The Area Councillors, with support of the Area Council Environmental Officers and the other identify groups gathered all the materials needed for the clean-up.
The day’s exercise was aimed at ensuring that shoulders of the high ways, schools, streets among other public places of the town’s and district capital are clean and hygienic.
The exercise included the cleaning and picking of polythene bags, weeding, sweeping, gathering and disposing of refuse etc.
The volunteers were offered gloves, boots for protection and also brooms, rakes, shovels, wheel barrows, cutlasses etc. to ensure that the exercise was done effectively without any health problems.
Speaking with pupils at Yapei Basic schools, Hon. Iddi Kamilu, The Yapei Assembly Member for Yapei Electoral Area said cleanliness is next to Godliness and advocated much on the need for community members to keep their surrounding clean and tidy, he further admonished them not to throw rubbish indiscriminately to prevent diseases.
After the exercise, Mr. Dakurah Daniel, the Area Council Chairman, thanked all the volunteers for the wonderful work they had done. He pleaded on the citizens to make a behavioural change to keep the environment clean and prevent any form of communicable diseases.
CONCLUSION
In addressing participants and volunteers at the end of the activity, the Area Council Chairman called for greater care to sanitation by the peoples.
The clean-up exercise was successfully carried out.
